WTTC Global Summit 2017 Focuses on China’s Tourism

April 27, Bangkok, Xinhua News Agency (Reporters: Li Xinying, Yangzhou) At the 17th World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, on April 26, the Chinese delegation introduced the achievements and the latest development of the Chinese tourism industry.

As the year of 2017 is designated by the United Nations as the Year of International Sustainable Tourism for Development, the Summit discussed how to boost economic growth and raise the awareness of sustainable development through tourism.

In his address, UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai noted: The tourism industry is one of the biggest job creators in the world, and contributes 10.2% to the world's GDP. Tourism development can help eliminate poverty, promote economic growth and world peace and thus realize the UN's sustainable development goals by 2030.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha said: As the tourism hub for ASEAN and the whole world, Thailand would like to play a big role in promoting international and regional tourism connectivity.

The Summit dedicated a seminar to China related themes, in recognition of China's especially its outbound tourism's, contribution to the global tourism industry. China UnionPay President Ge Huayong and TCTS President Wu Jian gave reports on the rapid development and the latest development trend of Chinese tourism industry in recent years.

According to Ge, the Chinese tourism industry still has a lot of potential to be tapped and will contribute more to global tourism along with the growing spending power of Chinese residents, changes in their consumptions structure, improving tourism infrastructure and more utilization of tourism resources in China.

While talking about the latest development trend of Chinese tourism industry, Wu pointed out that the biggest change to Chinese tourists was reflected in their mentality, their upgraded consumption and higher demands for the quality and content of tourism services.

The WTTC, founded in 1990 and headquartered in London, is a forum for global business leaders in the tourism industry.
